❓ FAQ β€” Raw Feeding BARF & PMR

PMR (Prey Model Raw) mimics whole prey with 100% animal components: 80% muscle meat, 10% raw meaty bones, 10% organs. BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) adds 10-20% vegetables, seeds, and fruits to simulate the pre-digested stomach contents of prey that wild canines would consume.

2-2.5% is standard for normal adult dogs. Puppies need 5-10% of their expected adult weight. Dogs needing weight loss should eat 1.5-2%, while working dogs or lactating mothers need 3-4%.

Dogs' digestive systems have stomach pH of 1-2 (highly acidic) and fast transit time that kills most bacteria. However, humans can get infected through contact. Wash hands thoroughly after handling raw meat, use separate utensils, or choose freeze-dried raw for added safety.

Raw bones are soft, pliable, and safe to chew and swallow. Cooked bones become hard and brittle after high heat, easily splintering into sharp shards that can puncture the esophagus, stomach, or intestines, posing life-threatening risks.

Total organs are 10%: liver (5%) and other secreting organs like kidney and spleen (5%). Liver is the richest source of Vitamin A in animal bodies. Excessive liver causes Vitamin A toxicity (Hypervitaminosis A) with symptoms like bone loss, joint pain, and kidney damage.

Allow a minimum of 2-4 weeks for complete digestive adaptation to BARF/PMR. Start with a 24-hour fast, then feed 100% plain chicken for one week. Monitor stools daily: small, white, firm stools indicate good raw meat digestion.

Balanced PMR doesn't require supplements if you provide diverse protein sources (at least 3 different meats weekly). However, many add Omega-3 from salmon oil, natural Vitamin E, and kelp seaweed to compensate for trace mineral deficiencies when meat variety is limited.

Raw meaty bones contain calcium and phosphorus in a natural 2:1 ratioβ€”close to the body's ideal 1.2:1 requirement. Muscle meat is high in phosphorus (1:20 ratio) and very low in calcium. This is why 10% raw meaty bones are mandatory in every proper PMR meal.
